In a recent report, Sport mentioned that Newcastle United are keeping a keen eye on Barcelona defender Andreas Christensen this summer. It has been stated that the Magpies are big admirers of the Danish centre-back and could move in for him at the end of this season.
Christensen’s Good Run Of Form In Spanish Football
Christensen is having a solid campaign at the Catalan club as he has been responsible for producing a handful of dominant displays for them on the defensive third of the pitch. The Danish talent has played in 38 matches for Barca this season, scoring three goals and grabbing two assists in multiple competitions.
The 28-year-old has been a good contributor when defending inside his half based on his average of 0.8 tackles, 0.7 interceptions and 1.5 clearances per 90 minutes in La Liga. He has also been excellent when distributing the ball from the back, as evidenced by his pass completion rate of 94.3% in the Spanish first division (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the Nou Camp will expire in the summer of 2026 which would make it tough for the Magpies to sign him on the cheap later this year.
Should Newcastle United Boss Eddie Howe Go For Christensen?
Christensen is a tough-tackling defender who can time his challenges well to earn the ball back for his team inside his half. He doesn’t mind clearing the danger when the opposition are on the offensive and is a good passer of the ball as well.
At the moment, the Danish sensation is enjoying his football at the Nou Camp. He already knows the Premier League well from his time at Chelsea and won’t take much time to settle into life at Newcastle United if Eddie Howe can devise a way to bring him on board this summer.
At 28, Christensen is about to enter his prime which makes him a worthy target for the Magpies to pursue later this year. We can expect him to add more bite and steel to Howe’s defence. Christensen might even help the Tyneside club compete across all fronts in the coming years. Therefore, Newcastle should focus on going for someone like him when the transfer window commences at the end of this season.
