In a recent edition of the Daily Briefing, renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano revealed that Newcastle United are eyeing a move for Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly this summer. Romano wrote,
“We’re now hearing reports of a done deal for Adarabioyo to join Newcastle, but my understanding is that the race is still open. Newcastle have an interest in the player, but nothing is signed or agreed for him to join the Magpies. He is one of the players on their list, and for sure they will look at free-agent opportunities, with Lloyd Kelly at Bournemouth absolutely another target they’re looking at.”
Kelly’s Impressive Form At The Vitality Stadium
Kelly is enjoying a solid campaign at Bournemouth as he has put in a run of solid performances for them on the defensive third of the pitch. The 25-year-old has made 21 appearances for the Cherries in the league this season.
The English talent deserves some credit for averaging 1.1 tackles, 0.5 interceptions and 2.8 clearances per 90 minutes in the Premier League. He has even been tidy when distributing possession from inside his half after completing 77.8% of his attempted passes in the English top tier (stats via whoscored).
Should Newcastle United Boss Eddie Howe Snap Kelly Up This Summer?
Kelly is a solid tackler of the ball and can time his challenges well to secure the ball back for his side on the defensive third of the field. He usually puts his foot through the ball when the opposition are on the offensive.
The English defensive ace is even proficient at playing his way out from the back. He would bring more bite and steel to Newcastle‘s backline if Eddie Howe can devise a way to bring him on board this summer.
Kelly has what it takes to fight for a regular starting spot at St. James’ Park next season. He already knows the Premier League well by now and won’t take much time to settle into life at the Tyneside club.
At 25, Kelly’s peak years are ahead of him which makes him a good choice for the Magpies to consider at the end of this season. Thus, Howe would be wise to try everything in his power to snap him up later this year.
