As Manchester United look to strengthen their defensive unit in the summer, they have made enquiries for Sporting CP defender Goncalo Inacio, according to Football Transfers. The Premier League club find him good enough to add value at the Old Trafford.
Goncalo Inacio has been impressive this season
Goncalo Inacio moved to Sporting’s academy at an early age and worked his to earn the senior team call-up. His impressive performances made him a regular starter in the lineup. He has been instrumental in the Portuguese’s successful campaign this season.
The 22-year-old has featured in 46 games this term, netting four times and providing an assist. He is averaging 1.3 tackles, 0.8 interceptions, and 2 clearances per game. His successful passing rate stands near 90%, which allows the side to build attacks from the back (stats via whoscored).
Inacio has everything one needs in a modern-day defender. He has good pace, technical abilities, composure and tackling sense. Unlike many defenders, he also carries good skills on the balls and can break lines with his accurate passes.
A good move by Manchester United?
Manchester United undertstand the need to group together a better defensive batch if they wish to fight for all the major trophies next season. With the uncertainty over the future of Raphael Varane at the club and Jonny Evans being unconvincing enough, they must eye for a fresh defender.
The pursuit of Goncalo Inacio can be a move in the right direction. The Portuguese’s arrival will add depth to the squad as the player can feature as a centre-back or a full-back. He is still young, meaning he has a lot of room to improve and can serve the club for a long time.
The Red Devils will have to trigger the £51 million release clause as Sporting CP aren’t willing to sanction his move below that price. Apart from Manchester United, Liverpool are also highly interested in acquiring the services of the player.
