In a recent report, Jornal de Notícias (via Sport Witness) mentioned that Arsenal are leading the race for Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres. It has been stated that the Gunners are the main contenders to land the Swedish centre-forward in the summer transfer window.
Gyokeres’ Excellent Record In Portuguese Football This Season
The 25-year-old is having a productive campaign at the Portuguese club as he has scored for fun for them in the final third. Gyokeres has banged in 41 goals and picked up 15 assists in 47 matches for Sporting this season across all fronts.
The Swedish attacker has led the line well and deserves some credit for averaging 3.4 shots, 1.6 key passes and 2.2 dribbles per game in Liga Portugal. However, he needs to find a way to improve his ball distribution after making 73.7% of his attempted passes in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the Portuguese club will expire in the summer of 2028 which could make it difficult for the Gunners to get a deal done for him on the cheap later this year.
Is Gyokeres A Good Fit For Arsenal Boss Mikel Arteta?
Gyokeres has proven himself to be a lethal presence in front of the opponent’s goal over the past couple of years. He has also got the eye to set up some decent chances for his teammates on the offensive end of the field and is a good dribbler with the ball as well.
Standing at 1.87m, the Swedish striker can be a real handful for the opposition defenders. However, he needs to work on improving his link-up play deep inside the opponent’s half if he wants to taste success at the highest level.
We can expect Gyokeres to add more firepower to Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta’s attack. He has what it takes to help the Gunners compete for the Premier League title once again next season as long as he can make a smooth transition to life in the Premier League.
At 25, Gyokeres has his peak years ahead of him which makes him a good fit for Arsenal‘s needs in the long run. Therefore, Arteta should focus on bringing the Swedish sensation to the Emirates Stadium when the transfer window commences in the summer.
