Premier League club Newcastle United have made up their mind to bring a new goalie in the summer transfer window. Therefore, they have shown interest in Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, according to a report published by the Daily Mail.
Aaron Ramsdale’s situation at Arsenal
Aaron Ramsdale signed for Arsenal in the summer of 2021 on a long-term contract. After just three games, he made his debut and impressed everyone with his skills. His impressive stint between the sticks made him the primary goalkeeper of the side.
The English stopper even played a vital part in the Gunners’ second finish in the Premier League last season. However, things have changed ever since the arrival of David Raya from Brentford. Ramsdale has fallen in the eyes of Mikel Arteta and has served as second fiddle to the Spanish goalkeeper this season.
He has appeared in just 12 games, accumulating only 931 minutes in total. Frustrated at his situation, Ramsdale wants to be a prime goalkeeper and is willing to switch the club in the summer if needed. His crazy reflexes and ability to block close-range shots are appreciated by the football fraternity.
An ideal signing for Newcastle United
Newcastle United have Nick Pope as their number-one goalkeeper. However, he is serving a shoulder injury and the 35-year-old Martin Dubravka has been playing in his place. It’s not tough to understand that the latter is in the twilight of his career and might not be at his best.
Hence, the Magpies want to sign Aaron Ramsdale to bolster their defensive unit. He can be a long-term solution as even Pope has crossed 32 years. Moreover, the English goalkeeper has already worked with boss Eddie Howe at Bournemouth.
Ramsdale could be a good fit in Howe’s system as he has good ball distribution sense. It will be helpful for a side that favours possession-based football and relies on pace to hit on counter-attacks.
