Premier League side Newcastle United have joined the race for Atalanta defender Giorgio Scalvini, according to GIVEMESPORT. The club believe he could be a fitting fill for Sven Botman, who is set to remain sidelined for a long period of time.
Giorgio Scalvini is a star in making
Coming through the academy of Atalanta, Giorgio Scalvini has climbed up the ladders pretty quickly. His consistent performances earned him a spot in the senior side. As expected, he didn’t disappoint the people, who showed faith in him.
The Italian defender has already cemented his spot at the club level and has featured in eight games for the national side. He has been a solid performer for the Serie A this season with appearances in 34 games. In those many games, Scalvini found the back of the net once and provided three assists.
The 20-year-old is averaging 2 tackles, 1.7 interceptions, and 1.8 clearances. He is a technically superior defender, who reads the threats well. He dominates the aerial duels as he stands 6ft 4in tall and is a physically tough guy to pass by.
A fine fill for Sven Botman?
Newcastle United’s alleged interest in Giorgio Scalvini emerged after the injury to Sven Botman during the FA Cup match against Manchester City. Initially, the injury didn’t look very serious but it was the other way around when the scan reports came.
The reliable defender has torn his anterior cruciate ligament and is expected to be out of action for six to nine months. It means the Magpies will have to bring a fresh defender in the summer window to fill Botman’s spot for the start of the next season.
The pursuit of Scalvini seems a promising move as the youngster has been proving his talent. He can be a good addition to the squad and a long-term solution to the defensive unit. However, Manchester United and Chelsea are also monitoring the player and will give stiff competition.
