Premier League club Manchester United have started making their moves to strengthen the unit ahead of next season. As per Fichajes, they are interested in signing Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin in the summer transfer window.
The emergence of Andriy Lunin
Andriy Lunin signed for Real Madrid in the summer of 2018 for a reported fee of €8.5 million. He was loaned to numerous clubs in the initial stages. However, his impressive glimpses made him a backup to first-choice goal-stopper Thibaut Courtois.
It was only Courtois’ injury that allowed the Ukrainian goalkeeper an extended run with the team. Luckily, he didn’t disappoint as well and has performed enormously well. He has been instrumental in the Spanish side’s success this term so far.
Lunin has featured in 28 games this season, keeping 12 clean sheets. One can’t forget his heroics against Manchester City in the second leg of the Champions League quarter-final round, which opened the doors for the semis.
Will Manchester United make an official move for Andriy Lunin?
Despite signing Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir last summer, Manchester United are keen on bringing in a new goalkeeper in the summer. They aren’t confident about the former being the first-choice given his inconsistent performances this season.
Hence, the Red Devils want to sign Andriy Lunin, who has been terrific for Real Madrid. They believe he can succeed at Old Trafford and help the club climb back to the top positions. However, the signing won’t be easy amid interest from multiple clubs.
Even Real Madrid are reportedly working on offering a new contract to Lunin, whose contract runs until 2025. However, the goalkeeper might hesitate in signing the new deal as he would want to play regularly and emerge as the first-choice keeper.
But that might not be possible with Thibaut Courtois’ presence in the squad. Hence, a summer switch might be on the cards for the 25-year-old.
