Premier League club Manchester City have joined the race to sign Bayer Leverkusen defender Jeremie Frimpong, according to a report published in The Sun. The club understand the need to bring in a fresh full-back in the summer after the unit suffered multiple injuries in the backline this season.
Jeremie Frimpong excels in both
Jeremie Frimpong is a product of Manchester City academy, who permanently moved to Celtic in 2019. Looking at his huge potential, Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen lured him away in the winter of 2021 for an undisclosed fee.
The signing turned out to be fruitful as the Dutch player has been contributing significantly to the club’s inspiring ongoing campaign. Frimpong has featured in 34 games so far, scoring 11 games and providing the same number of assists. He is averaging 1.7 shots, 1.5 key passes, and 1.5 dribbles per game (stats via whoscored).
The 23-year-old is versatile enough to play as a right full-back or as a winger. He is excellent at creating threats through his dribbling and key passes. His defensive aspects of the game are top notch too, making him an ideal pick for many sides across the globe.
A long-term solution?
Manchester City haven’t hesitated in making moves for talented footballers over the past decade. They are always on the hunt to sign performing players to strengthen their already star-studded squad. Their alleged pursuit of Jeremie Frimpong is no different.
Frimpong has been a solid performer for Bayer Leverkusen and there is no reason why he cannot perform in the Premier League. With proper guidance and experience, he will improve further. The youngster can be a cover and long-term replacement for Kyle Walker.
However, arch-rivals Manchester United and Arsenal are also keeping tabs on the full-back. But the player might prefer moving to his former home. He can win major trophies with the Citizens and learn better under Pep Guardiola. He will cost around £35 million as per reports.
