In a recent tweet, journalist Florian Plettenberg claimed that Manchester City are among the clubs hoping to land Bayer 04 Leverkusen talent Florian Wirtz. It has been revealed that the Mancunian club could face competition in the form of Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Liverpool in the race to land the German attacker next year.
Wirtz’s Impressive Run Of Form In German Football
Wirtz is having a fine campaign at the German club after putting in a lot of impressive performances for them in the final third. The German talent has taken part in 44 matches for Bayer 04 Leverkusen this season, netting 17 goals and securing 19 assists in various competitions.
The 20-year-old has been a good performer for Leverkusen in the opposition half as he is averaging 2.2 shots, 2.3 key passes and 2.5 dribbles per game in Bundesliga. He has even been careful when interchanging possession with his teammates based on his pass completion rate of 84.6% in the German top tier (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the Bundesliga club will expire in the summer of 2027 which would make it tough for Man City to sign him on the cheap next year.
Should Manchester City Boss Pep Guardiola Go For Wirtz?
Wirtz is a decent dribbler with the ball at his feet and can make a few inviting chances for his teammates on the offensive end of the field. He can strike the ball with venom and precision from long range and has done well to score and create plenty of goals for Leverkusen this season.
The German youngster is primarily an attacking midfielder but can also function as a wide player if asked to do so. We can expect him to inject more quality into Man City head coach Pep Guardiola’s frontline in the long run.
Wirtz is already playing at a high level and could help the Mancunian club challenge for a lot of major honours over the next decade. Therefore, it makes sense for Man City to go for the German attacker next summer. However, there are some question marks over whether Wirtz can cope with the physical side and high intensity of the Premier League if Guardiola can find a way to bring him on board in 2025.
