Drake Maye is very much in demand right now. With NFL draft right around the corner, and with several sides like the New England Patriots falling in love with the Maye, there is no doubt there will be lots of interest in the 21 year old quarter back.
Maye won the ACC Player of the Year a couple of years back in 2022 and has collected up over 8,000 passing yards in college football. Those are indeed impressive numbers. However, let’s take a look at Drake Maye’s journey to where he is now, especially his parents and how they helped.
Drake Maye Father
Drake Maye is not the first sportsperson in his family. Or even the first football player. Or even the first quarter back. No doubt good athletic genes run in the family as his father Mark Maye was the quarter back for North Carolina back in the eighties. At that time, Mark was a hot commodity and North Carolina beat the likes of Alabama and Florida State to land him.
Mark Maye was the leading North Carolina in offense and passing in the mid eighties and was very much the star QB for them.
Mark Maye also played in the NFL having played for both the Kansas City Chiefs and Chicago Bears. He played for a total of 5 years in the NFL, between 1990 to 1995 before transitioning to coaching in high school football.
Mark Maye was not just a star athlete but also earned his Academic All-ACC honors two times with a 3.2 GPA in business administration. He also did his MBA after returning to Chapel Hill.

Drake Maye Mother
Aimee Maye, mother of Drake Maye, was also at North Carolina around 1988-1992 as she was part of Chapel Hill’s basketball team. A tremendous basketball player and that’s how Mark and Aimee met and fell in love.
Mark Maye has often credited his wife Aimee Maye of transferring her genes to Drake and the other kids. Did you know that Mark and and Aimee Maye along with their kids are known as UNC’s Royal family with Drake the shortest kid at 6’4?
Role of Drake Maye’s Parents
Let’s be honest, the role of genetics is undeniable here. Also, Drake Maye’s father also being a quarterback and one of the greatest college football players of all time helps. With his mother also being in athletics, it’s safe to say that Drake was probably destined to end up in the NFL.
