In a recent interview with Caught offside, renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano provided an update on the future of Newcastle United star Kieran Trippier. Romano said,
“At the moment Newcastle are still happy with Trippier to stay and be part of their project, that’s why they rejected the chance to sell him to Bayern Munich in the January window. But it’s still March so let’s wait before mentioning final decisions for the summer.”
Trippier’s Season Of Mixed Emotions In The Premier League
Trippier is having an up-and-down season at the Tyneside club but has managed to put in a string of impressive displays on the right side of Eddie Howe’s defence. The England international has registered one goal and earned 11 assists in 36 matches for Newcastle during this campaign across all competitions.
The 33-year-old has proven his worth on the right flank by averaging 2.3 tackles, 0.9 interceptions, 1.8 clearances, 2.5 key passes and 0.6 dribbles per game in the Premier League. He has even been careful when distributing the ball after making 79.9% of his attempted passes in the English top tier (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at St. James’ Park will expire at the end of next season. Thus, Howe would have to consider cashing in on him this summer or else risk losing him on a free transfer in 2025.
Can Newcastle United Boss Eddie Howe Afford To Lose Trippier?
Trippier is a tough-tackling full-back who can time his challenges well to earn the ball back for his team inside his half. He doesn’t mind putting his foot through the ball when needed and can create a few decent chances for his teammates from the right flank. The English talent can shoot the ball purely and with venom from long range but needs to make more runs out in the wide areas.
Trippier is primarily a right-back but can also play as a right-winger or as a left-back if required. He is currently one of the first names in Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe’s teamsheet. The English talent has done well to carry most of his team’s creative workload over the past 18 months.
At 33, Trippier might still have a few good years left in him. Hence, the Magpies should think about offering him a new, short-term contract. He is good enough to help the Tyneside club compete for a top-four finish in the coming years. Thus, Newcastle simply cannot afford to lose a player of his quality later this year.
