In a recent interview with Caught Offside, journalist Fabrizio Romano offered an update on Barcelona and their pursuit of Liverpool star Luis Diaz in the summer. Romano said,
“Staying with Liverpool for a moment, I want to reassure fans that I’m not hearing anything about Luis Diaz and Barcelona, despite some stories about his agent meeting with Barca.
“Diaz’s full focus is on Liverpool and also I don’t think it’s possible for Barcelona to go and pay the kind of crazy fee that would be required for Diaz.”
Diaz’s Impressive Form In The Premier League This Season
Diaz is enjoying his football at the Merseyside club right now after putting in several eye-catching displays on the left side of Jurgen Klopp’s attack. The 27-year-old has scored 11 goals and grabbed five assists in 38 appearances for the Reds this season on all fronts.
The Colombia international has proven his worth on the left flank by averaging 2.5 shots, 1.3 key passes and 1.6 dribbles per 90 minutes in Premier League football. He has even been careful when interchanging possession with his teammates based on his pass success rate of 84.2% in the top tier of English football (stats via whoscored).
What Should Barcelona Do With Regards To Diaz?
Diaz has got the pace and dribbling ability to cause a lot of headaches for his marker out in the wide areas. He has got the vision to set up a few decent plays for his teammates in and around the opponent’s penalty box. The Colombian talent can even strike the ball with power and accuracy from long range when he is playing well on the field. He is primarily a left-sided wide player but can also fill in as a right-winger if asked to do so.
Diaz is currently serving an important role in Liverpool’s first team and is under a long-term contract at the Merseyside club. Hence, he would be an unrealistic target for Barcelona to consider in the summer.
The Catalan club‘s recent financial struggles could see them rule themselves out of the race to land the Colombian wide player. Barca would be better off looking at other, more affordable options when the transfer window reopens at the end of this season.
