In a recent print edition, Record mentioned that Tottenham Hotspur are monitoring Sporting CP midfielder Morten Hjulmand. It has been revealed that Spurs are showing interest in recruiting the Danish talent in the summer.
Hjulmand’s Impressive Form In Portuguese Football This Season
Hjulmand is having a decent campaign at the Portuguese club as he has managed to put in a series of impressive displays for them at the centre of the park. The 24-year-old has found the back of the net twice and secured four assists in 35 appearances for Sporting this season across all competitions.
The Danish sensation has proven himself to be a capable presence in the middle of the park based on his average of 2.0 tackles, 0.8 interceptions, 0.8 clearances, 0.9 shots and 0.7 key passes per game in the Liga Portugal. He has even distributed the ball relatively well from midfield after making 87% of his attempted passes in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at Sporting will run out in the summer of 2028 which could make it difficult for Spurs to sign him on the cheap at the end of this campaign.
What Will Hjulmand Add To Tottenham Hotspur Boss Angelos Postecoglu’s Side?
Hjulmand is a solid tackler of the ball and can scan the danger well to earn possession back for his team inside his half. He doesn’t hesitate to clear the danger when needed and can shoot the ball purely from long range.
The Danish sensation can even set up a few inviting chances for others around him in the opposition half. He is primarily a defensive midfielder but can also serve as a box-to-box midfielder or play in the number ten position if asked to do so.
We can expect Hjulmand to add more bite and steel to Tottenham head coach Angelos Postecoglu’s midfield department. He is good enough to help the North London club compete across all fronts in the coming years.
At 24, Hjulmand has got his best years ahead of him which makes him a worthy target for Spurs to pursue at the end of this season. However, the jury is still out on whether he can adapt to the physical side and high intensity of Premier League football.
