Manchester City star midfielder Kevin de Bruyne has been heavily linked to Saudi interest and could leave England if a mouth-watering offer arrives. Hence, the club want to be prepared for such circumstances and are hunting for his replacement.
The Citizens have identified Villarreal emerging star as a potential player to fill the Belgian’s spot if he leaves. According to a report published in Fichajes, the club are keen on signing the youngster in the summer transfer window.
Alex Baena has stepped up this season
Alex Baena was promoted to the senior team last season after impressive performances in Villarreal’s youth setup. Since then, he has taken huge strides in his professional career. He has emerged as one of the most prominent midfielders in the league.
The Spanish footballer has featured in 37 games this season so far, netting five times and providing 13 assists. He is averaging 1.7 shots, 2.3 key passes and 0.6 dribbles per game. Though passing accuracy stands around 77%, which he would like to improve (stats via whoscored).
Baena mainly plays as an attacking midfielder and is comfortable to switch to both the flanks. He is excellent provided key passes, through balls or crosses to create goal-scoring opportunities. His long-range shoot and free-kick-taking abilities are also great.
Manchester City have multiple names on the target list
Alex Baena’s role in Villarreal is similar to Kevin de Bruyne’s role in Manchester City. Hence. he becomes an ideal fit for the latter’s replacement. Being just 22 years old means he has enough time to improve and strengthen his overall quality.
However, the signing won’t be a piece of cake for the Citizens. Counterparts like Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are also monitoring the youngster. They might be tempted to make a move in the summer considering Baena’s huge potential.
Baena is not the only probable name to fill de Bruyne’s shoes as City are also exploring deals for Florian Wirtz, Lucas Paqueta and Xavi Simons.
