Liverpool have identified Porto midfielder Alan Varela as a potential target for the summer transfer window, according to a Portuguese newspaper O Jogo. The club wants the player to reinforce their midfield unit ahead of the next season.
The Reds’ interest in the defensive midfielder arose last season but they didn’t make any move. However, his recent performances have tempted the management to acquire his services although they didn’t send any scouts to watch the youngster play.
Alan Varela’s rising reputation
Alan Varela has been an eye-catching player since his days at Boca Juniors. He has become a vital part of the Porto side since joining them in the summer for €8 million. He is known for his solid defensive skills, possession-based football and accurate passes.
The Argentine has featured in 28 games this season so far, contributing two goals and as many assists. He is averaging 1.2 tackles, 0.9 interceptions and 1 clearance per game. He also has an average of 1.1 shots per game along with a passing accuracy of 88.8 (stats via whoscored).
The 22-year-old recently ran riot against Arsenal in the Champions League tie and helped his side win 1-0. He dominated the midfield and controlled the tempo of the game. His performance against the Gunners has forced giants clubs to keep tabs on him.
Tough competition for Liverpool
The inclusion of Alan Varela in Liverpool’s squad will strengthen their squad, especially the midfield section. He could be a long-term replacement for 31-year-old Wataru Endo. Though Endo has done pretty well in recent months and the club is considering offering him a long-term deal.
However, the signing won’t be easy as the likes of Manchester City and Manchester United are also interested in the player. The Red Devils even sent their scouts to watch the midfielder play against the Gunners. Varela is tied up with the Portuguese club until 2028 and has a release clause of around €70 million. Hence, the signing is still far away for Liverpool.
