Chelsea are highly interested in signing Barcelona defender Jules Kounde in the summer transfer window, according to HITC. They want to strengthen their defensive line amid uncertainty over the future of multiple players in the squad.
The Blues reportedly sent their scouts to watch Kounde play against Napoli in the Champions League last week. The club is willing to spend big for the French defender but they might face competition from arch-rivals Manchester United, who are also interested in the player.
Jules Kounde needs no introduction
Jules Kounde came into the limelight during his three-year impressive stint at Sevilla. He was then signed by Barcelona in July 2022. Since then, he has become a vital part of the Spanish club, featuring in 72 games across all competitions.
The 23-year-old has excelled as both centre-back and right-back, though he prefers the former position more. He has featured in 33 games this season so far, contributing two goals and four assists. He is averaging 1.1 tackles, 0.7 interceptions, and 0.4 blocks per game (stats via whoscored).
Chelsea are eyeing for Thiago Silva’s replacement
Chelsea have been showing interest in Jules Kounde for a long time. They wanted to sign the player when he was at Sevilla but Barcelona lured him away. However, the Spanish club are reportedly willing to cash in on the player in the summer window.
Barcelona’s financial struggles are hidden to nobody and pressure is mounting on them to maintain a fair accounts book. Hence, the club will listen to offers for the versatile defender. The Blues can capitalise on the opportunity to sign the services of the Frenchman.
Chelsea’s interest in Kounde is understandable as Thiago Silva has entered the twilight of his career. He has six months left in his contract and is likely to leave the club following this season. Therefore, the club is actively searching for a right-footed defender.
Jules’ addition will be a big boost for them as the player is solid physically and experienced too. Not only at the club level but he is a reliable name on the international stage as well. It will be interesting to see if the Blues finally take a step further to propose an offer or not.
