In a recent report, Fichajes mentioned that Barcelona midfielder Oriol Romeu is on the radar of Napoli. It has been stated that the Italian club are eyeing a move to sign the Spanish midfield ace from the Catalan club this summer.
Romeu’s Sporadic Role In Spanish Football This Season
Romeu has served as an important member of Barca’s match-day squad and has done well to put in a few solid displays in La Liga. The 32-year-old has made 31 appearances for the Catalan outfit this season, securing one assist in the process across all competitions.
The Spanish talent has seen most of his appearances come off the bench which explains why he is only averaging 1.2 tackles, 0.7 clearances, 0.5 shots and 0.4 key passes per 90 minutes in La Liga. He has been accurate when distributing the ball from midfield after completing 89.9% of his attempted passes in the top tier of Spanish football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the Nou Camp will run out in the summer of 2026. Hence, Xavi is under no immediate pressure to cash in on him this year.
Should Barcelona Cash In On Romeu?
Romeu is a solid tackler of the ball and can offer decent protection for his teammates at the back when he is playing regularly and with confidence on the field. He can make a few crucial interceptions for his team and doesn’t mind putting his foot through the ball when needed.
The Spanish talent is a good passer of the ball as well. However, at 32, Romeu is a player on the decline. Hence, Barcelona would be wise to cash in on him if they receive a favourable offer for his services.
Romeu can still play an important role in the Catalan club‘s squad next season. However, he is not good enough to start matches regularly at the Nou Camp. All in all, Barca should think about letting him go in the upcoming transfer window.
