In a recent report, Calciomercato mentioned that Aston Villa are in pole position to land Atletico Madrid defender Mario Hermoso. It has been revealed that the Villans are facing competition in the form of AC Milan and Juventus but seems to be leading the race to sign the Spanish centre-half this summer.
Hermoso’s Impressive Form In Spanish Football
Hermoso is having a solid campaign at the Spanish club as he has put in a series of impressive displays at the heart of Diego Simeone’s defence. The Spanish talent has been involved in 35 matches for the Madrid outfit this season, scoring two goals and grabbing one assist across all fronts.
The 28-year-old has been a rock at the back and deserves credit for averaging 1.7 tackles, 1.0 interceptions and 2.9 clearances per game in La Liga. He has even been tidy with his ball distribution after making 87.1% of his attempted passes in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the Wanda Metropolitano will expire at the end of this campaign. Hence, it makes sense for Aston Villa to try and sign him on a free transfer in the summer.
Is Hermoso A Good Option For Aston Villa?
Hermoso is a solid tackler of the ball and can time his challenges well to secure the ball back for his team inside his half. He doesn’t mind clearing the danger when the opposition are on the front foot and can chip in by scoring the odd goal for his team.
Standing at 1.84m, Hermoso is a towering presence inside his half. He even excels at playing his way out from the back. Therefore, it is only logical for Aston Villa to try and snap him up on a free transfer later this year.
We can expect Hermoso to bring more quality and depth to Unai Emery’s squad. He is good enough to fight for a regular starting spot at Villa Park next season. At 28, the Spanish sensation has entered his prime which makes him a great option for the West Midlands club to consider in the summer.
However, it remains to be seen whether Hermoso can cope with the high intensity of Premier League football if Emery manages to snap him up soon.
