In a recent report, Sport stated that Arsenal midfielder Jorginho is open to joining Barcelona this summer. It has been claimed that the Italy international would be delighted to join the Catalan club after failing to do so a few years ago.
Jorginho’s Important Role In North London This Season
Jorginho has played a sporadic role in Mikel Arteta’s squad this season but has managed to put in a few influential displays at the centre of the park. The Italian midfield ace has participated in 26 matches for the Gunners during this campaign, scoring one goal and securing one assist in various competitions.
The 32-year-old has seen most of playing opportunities come as a substitute which could be why he is only averaging 1.1 tackles, 0.5 interceptions and 0.2 clearances per game in the Premier League. He has even been tidy when distributing the ball from inside his half after making 91.1% of his attempted passes in the English top tier (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the North London club will run out at the end of this campaign which could open the door for Barca to sign him on a free transfer in the summer transfer window.
Should Barcelona Snap Jorginho Up In The Summer?
Jorginho is a tough-tackling midfielder who can read the danger well to earn the ball back for his team inside his half. He doesn’t hesitate to clear the danger when needed and is a great passer of the ball. The Italian is also renowned for converting his penalties. He is primarily a defensive midfielder but can also operate as a box-to-box midfielder if asked to do so.
We can expect Jorginho to add more quality and depth to Barcelona‘s squad. He is good enough to fight for a regular starting spot at the Nou Camp in the coming years. At 32, the Italian has still got a few good seasons left in him to play at a high level.
Thus, it makes sense for Barca to snap Jorginho up on a free transfer in the upcoming transfer period. However, only time will tell whether the Italy international can maintain his good form in La Liga. Still, the Catalan club should focus on recruiting him this summer.
