In a recent report, Sport stated that Arsenal have set their sights on Real Madrid custodian Andriy Lunin. It has been claimed that the Gunners are eyeing a move to bring the Ukraine international to North London in the summer transfer window.
Lunin’s Decent Form In La Liga This Season
Lunin is having an impressive campaign at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium as he produced a run of solid performances in goal for the Madrid club. The 25-year-old has shipped 19 goals and secured ten clean sheets in 23 appearances for Real Madrid this season in multiple competitions.
The Ukrainian talent deserves a lot of credit for averaging 1.1 clearances and 2.8 long balls per 90 minutes in La Liga. He has even been careful when distributing the ball from the back after making 85.9% of his attempted passes in the Spanish first division (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the Madrid club will run out in the summer of 2028. Thus, it would be tough for the Gunners to snap him up on a cut-price deal in the upcoming transfer window. Even then, Arsenal could benefit from recruiting a keeper of Lunin’s quality later this year.
Should Arsenal Head Coach Mikel Arteta Go For Lunin?
Lunin can be a safe pair of hands in between the sticks when he is playing regularly and with confidence for Real Madrid. He is a good handler of the ball and can make a few timely saves for his side at the back.
The Ukraine international doesn’t mind coming out of his lines to clear the danger when the opposition are on the front foot. He is a tidy passer of the ball as well which makes him a good fit for Mikel Arteta’s brand of football at Arsenal.
At 25, Lunin has got his best years ahead of him. Hence, he would be a great signing for the Gunners to pull off at the end of this season. However, only time will tell whether he can make a smooth transition to life in Premier League football.
We can expect Lunin to enhance the quality of Arteta’s first XI and help the North London club compete for some major silverware over the next few years. All in all, Arsenal should go for the Real Madrid goalie later this year as it’s obvious that Ramsdale will leave at the end of the season and Arteta will need someone to challenge Raya for the No. 1 spot.
