In a recent report, Il Bianconero mentioned that Newcastle United wanted to land Atalanta midfielder Teun Koopmeiners last January. It has been stated that the Magpies launched an offer in the region of £40m for the Dutch talent but failed to agree on a deal for him last month.
Koopmeiners’ Impressive Numbers In Serie A This Season
Koopmeiners is having a decent campaign at the Italian club as he has put in a string of influential displays for them in the middle of the park. The Castricum-born talent has scored seven goals and earned four assists in 26 matches for Atalanta this season across various competitions.
The 25-year-old has been a positive influence in both halves based on his average of 1.3 tackles, 1.2 clearances, 1.6 shots, 2.3 key passes and 0.7 dribbles per game in Serie A. He has even been tidy when distributing possession from midfield after completing 81.9% of his attempted passes in the Italian first division (stats via whoscored).
Koopmeiners’ current deal at the Italian club will run out in the summer of 2027. Hence, Newcastle would have to make a big offer if they are serious about bringing him to St. James’ Park.
Should Newcastle United Boss Eddie Howe Go For Koopmeiners?
Koopmeiners is a good tackler of the ball and usually clears the danger when the opposition are on the offensive. He can strike the ball with venom and accuracy from long range and can also engineer a few promising chances for his teammates up top.
The Dutch sensation is also proficient at making some clever runs with the ball from midfield. He is primarily a defensive midfielder but can also function as a box-to-box midfielder or as an attacking midfielder if asked to do so.
We can expect Koopmeiners to bring more quality to Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe’s midfield department. He has got the skillset and experience to warrant a regular starting spot at St. James’ Park next season. Thus, the Magpies should consider going in with an improved offer for him when the transfer window reopens later this year.
At 25, Koopmeiners has got his best years ahead of him which makes him a worthy target for the Tyneside club this summer.
