In a recent report, journalist Pete O’Rourke mentioned that Newcastle United are keen on landing Everton midfielder Amadou Onana. It is believed that the Magpies are eager to secure the services of the Belgian talent next summer.
Onana’s Impressive Run Of Form At Merseyside
Onana has enjoyed a solid campaign at Goodison Park after putting in a string of dominant performances at the heart of Sean Dyche’s midfield. The Belgian sensation has scored two goals and grabbed one assist in 24 matches for the Toffees this season across all competitions.
The 22-year-old has been a decent performer at the centre of the park as he is averaging 2.6 tackles, 0.6 interceptions, 1.1 clearances, 1.1 shots and 0.6 key passes per game in Premier League football. He has even been accurate when distributing possession from midfield after making 84.2% of his attempted passes in the English top tier (stats via whoscored).
Onana’s current contract at Everton will run out in the summer of 2027. Thus, the Magpies will have to make a big offer if they want to convince the Toffees to part ways with their prized asset later this year.
What Will Onana Bring To Newcastle United?
Onana is a solid tackler of the ball and can make a few important interceptions for his team in the middle of the park. He doesn’t hesitate to clear the danger when needed and can shoot the ball with venom from long range. The Belgian talent can even engineer the odd chance for others around him in the final third. However, he needs to find a way to improve his productivity in front of the opponent’s goal.
Onana is primarily a defensive midfielder but can also serve as a box-to-box midfielder or as a centre-back if told to do so. At 22, he will only get better as he matures as a footballer in the coming seasons. Hence, Onana would be a terrific signing for the Magpies in the long run.
The Belgium international would bring more bite and steel to Newcastle boss Eddie Howe’s midfield. He is good enough to increase competition for places within the Tyneside club‘s match-day squad. Thus, Howe should go all out to recruit Onana in the summer.
