In a recent report, Calciomercato revealed that Newcastle United are among the clubs hoping to sign Genoa winger Albert Gudmundsson. It has been stated that the Magpies are eager to land the Icelandic talent but could face competition in the form of Spurs in the race for him.
Gudmundsson’s Impressive Form In Serie A So Far
Gudmundsson is having an impressive season at the Italian club as he has put in a handful of promising displays for them in the final third. The 26-year-old has netted 11 goals and secured three assists in 24 appearances for his current employers during this campaign in multiple competitions.
The Icelandic sensation has done well to average 1.7 shots, 2.5 key passes and 1.5 dribbles per 90 minutes in Serie A football. He has even been accurate when distributing the ball in the final third after completing 80% of his attempted passes in the Italian first division (stats via whoscored).
Gudmundsson’s current contract at Genoa will run down in the summer of 2027 which would make it difficult for the Magpies to land him on a cut-price deal later this year.
Should Newcastle United Boss Eddie Howe Go For Gudmundsson?
Gudmundsson is a good dribbler with the ball at his feet and can make a few driving runs with the ball out in the wide areas. He can shoot the ball with power from all ranges and deserves credit for adding a lot of goals to his game this season.
The Iceland international can also orchestrate some meaningful openings for his teammates in the attacking end of the field. We can expect him to bring more firepower to Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe’s frontline. The Genoa star is primarily a striker but can also fill in as a wide player on either wing if asked to do so.
Gudmundsson has what it takes to rival Alexander Isak for a regular starting spot at St. James’ Park. At 26, he is about to enter his prime which makes him a good option for the Tyneside club to consider in the summer transfer window. Hence, Howe would be wise to go for Gudmundsson later this year. However, only time will tell whether the Icelandic attacker can make a smooth transition to life in England.
