Manchester United are interested in signing Luton Town star Ross Barkley in the summer transfer window as reported by the Sun. The club sees him as a potential replacement for Brazilian midfielder Casemiro, who is likely to leave the club at the end of the season.
The English midfielder is willing to make a permanent switch if his current side fails to retain their Premier League status. The hatters are 18th in the points table with only 20 points in their bag after 25 rounds of play. However, they are just a point off the 17th position and can easily climb up a few positions.
A Proven Veteran
Ross Barkley has been a solid performer in the Premier League for Luton Town. Despite going through a dismal season, they have managed to give tough fights to some of the top clubs in the league. Barkley has run the show for his side in the midfield.
The English midfielder has featured in 24 games this season so far, netting three goals and providing as many assists. He is averaging 1.7 tackles, 0.8 interceptions, and 1.9 clearances per game. In the attacking front, he has an average of 2.2 shots, 1.8 key passes and 2.3 dribbles per game (stats via whoscored).
These stats are a testimony to the 30-year-old’s consistency and versatility on the field. Even in a recent outing against the Reds, he dominated the possession in the midfield. He almost scored an equaliser when he hit the post.
Manchester United have to sign players
Manchester United’s interest in Ross Barkley is justified as the likes of Casemiro, Raphael Varane, Christian Eriksen, and Anthony Martial are likely to make an exit following this season. Hence, the club wants to sign young blood to build a long-term squad.
Ross Barkley’s arrival will add experience and depth to the Reds’ squad. He has ample experience playing in the English league and performing well. He can be a great short-term solution and a perfect replacement for Casemiro in the midfield.
