English club Manchester United are proactive in the market to strengthen their squad ahead of the next season. Recently they were alerted on Matthijs de Ligt‘s situation at Bayern Munich and the possibility of his availability, according to Mirror.
The Dutchman’s situation hasn’t been improving at the German club ever since joining them in 2022. He is yet to cement his place in the starting lineup and win Thomas Tuchel’s trust. If the situation doesn’t improve, he will be ready to leave the club in search of game time.
Matthijs de Ligt is yet to hit his full potential
Matthijs de Ligt was regarded as one of the top defenders in the world and a future star when he used to represent Ajax. However, he has been struggling to uplift his professional career ever since leaving Serie A. A prominent role at the Bavarians would’ve given him a different identity but that hasn’t been happening.
The arrival of Kim Min-jae from Italian club Napoli and the presence of Dayot Upamecano have made his life tough. Even in the recent top clash between Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen, he was left as an unused substitute. The club went with the backline of Eric Dier, Kim Min-jae and Dayot Upamecano.
When asked about fitness, de Ligt stated that he was completely fit to participate in the contest. This clearly indicates that he has gone down the ranks which isn’t an ideal situation to be in. If the situation persists, the 24-year-old defender might have to look for other clubs despite having three and a half years remaining in his contract.
What does it mean for Manchester United?
The current situation of Matthijs de Ligt at Bayern Munich opens a possible door for Manchester United, who have been a fan of the footballer. They have been tracking him for long and wanted to acquire his services but couldn’t make it possible.
The Red Devils desperately need to reinforce their defensive line as both Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans’ contracts will expire following this season. There are also dark clouds floating over Harry Maguire’s future at the Old Trafford.
The presence of boss Erik ten Hag might also tempt de Light to sign for Manchester United as he has played under him earlier. Under his guidance, he became a force to reckon with at Ajax and would want to repeat the same at a new home.
