In a recent column on the Daily Briefing, journalist Fabrizio Romano stated that Manchester City are monitoring Porto midfielder Alan Varela ahead of a potential move for him in the summer. Romano said,
“There have been reports doing the rounds of several top teams scouting Varela, including Manchester City, but for now my understanding is that it is just normal scouting activity, and nothing more advanced than that.
“Many clubs are sending scouts to follow the 22-year-old midfielder as he’s been excellent for Porto in the recent months. I’m also told he has €70m release clause into his contract, and we know how difficult is to negotiate with Portuguese clubs, so this could be a difficult deal if any suitors come forward in the summer.”
Varela’s Impressive Rise At Porto
Varela is having an impressive campaign in Portuguese football as he has managed to put in a handful of solid displays for Porto in the middle of the park. The Argentine talent has participated in 28 matches for the Portuguese outfit this season, scoring two goals and picking up two assists across various competitions.
The 22-year-old has given a good account of himself at both ends of the pitch based on his average of 1.1 tackles, 0.9 interceptions, 0.9 clearances, 1.1 shots and 0.7 key passes per 90 minutes in Liga Portugal. He has even distributed the ball accurately from midfield after completing 88.5% of his attempted passes in the Portuguese first division (stats via whoscored).
Should Manchester City Boss Pep Guardiola Go For Varela?
Varela loves a tackle and can make some important interceptions for his team when he is playing at the top of his game. The Argentine sensation doesn’t mind putting his foot through the ball when needed and can even shoot the ball with venom and precision from long range. He can also set up a few inviting chances for his teammates up top. However, Varela is still quite raw and would need time to prove his worth at the highest level.
We can expect him to bring more quality and depth to Man City boss Pep Guardiola‘s midfield department. Plus, Varela will help the Mancunian club challenge across all fronts in the coming years.
At 22, the South American sensation has got a bright future ahead of him. Thus, Guardiola should focus on going for him when the transfer window commences later this year.
