Jamie Carragher believes Arsenal have the finest defense in the league. He says this as they aim to catch Manchester City in the race for the Premier League title. Carragher made these remarks after Arsenal’s 3-1 triumph over Liverpool. In that match, Virgil van Dijk and Alisson made mistakes that allowed Gabriel Martinelli to easily score. Despite Gabriel’s own goal, Arsenal’s defense remained strong throughout the game.

Jamie Carragher said Manchester City were the true winners even though Arsenal beat Liverpool. But he thinks Arsenal’s strong defense makes them still in the running for the title. In Arsenal’s 3-1 win against Liverpool, mistake by Liverpool players helped Arsenal win. However, Arsenal’s defenders didn’t give Liverpool many chances, and the only goal they conceded was an own goal by Gabriel.
Mikel Arteta’s team has beaten Liverpool and City at home, and they drew at Anfield. They have a tough match at the Etihad Stadium in March, but their strong defense is important. Arsenal has only conceded 22 goals this season, which is the fewest in the league along with Liverpool. Carragher, speaking on Sky Sports‘ Monday Night Football, repeated his thoughts about the title race but praised Arsenal’s defense for their performance.
“They were better than Liverpool in all areas, but the big thing that stood out for me was how strong they were defensively. I never felt at any point in that game that Liverpool looked threatening or a goal was coming. Liverpool got a fortunate goal, we know that. I said after the game that I actually think yesterday’s result was probably a better result for Manchester City than maybe Arsenal, but Arsenal do have a slim chance of winning the title, and that chance comes a lot from how good they are defensively,” Carragher said.
“I think defensively, certainly not just in goals conceded but when you actually look at the underlying numbers, I think defensively they’re the best team in the Premier League. You saw that with what Liverpool did yesterday in terms of their actual xG. You go back to Manchester City going to the Emirates, as well, a game Arsenal ended up winning 1-0. The two best attacking teams in the league, City and Liverpool, went to Arsenal and never looked like scoring. So that’s what gives them [Arsenal] a chance,” he added.
