In a recent report, The Sun mentioned that Barcelona could join the race for Everton star Amadou Onana. It has been claimed that the Catalan club will only move in for the Belgian talent if the Toffees reduce their £51m asking price for their prized asset.
Onana’s Solid Season In Premier League Football
The 22-year-old has experienced a solid campaign at the Merseyside club as he has managed to put in a run of impressive displays for them at the centre of the park. Onana has featured in 25 matches for Everton this season, netting a couple of goals and earning one assist across all fronts.
The Belgian sensation has been a decent performer in the middle of the park based on his average of 2.5 tackles, 0.6 interceptions, 1.1 clearances, 1.0 shots and 0.6 key passes per game in the Premier League. He has even been accurate when interchanging possession with his teammates after making 84.6% of his attempted passes in league football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at Goodison Park will expire in the summer of 2027. Hence, Barcelona would find it tough to agree on a cut-price deal for him at the end of this season.
What Will Onana Bring To Barcelona?
Onana is a tough-tackling midfielder who can read the danger well to earn possession back for his team inside his half. He doesn’t mind clearing his lines when required and can strike the ball with power from long range.
The Belgian midfield ace has even got the vision to create a few inviting chances for others around him in the final third. He is primarily a defensive midfielder but can also operate as a centre-back or play as a box-to-box midfielder if asked to do so.
Onana would bring more bite and steel to Barcelona boss Xavi’s midfield department. He has what it takes to fight for a regular starting place at the Nou Camp over the next few years. At 22, Onana has the potential to become a success story at the Catalan club if Xavi can devise a way to win the race for his services later this year. However, only time will tell whether he can make a smooth transition to life in Spanish football.
