In a recent interview with Caught Offside, renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano stated that Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz is still on the radar of Arsenal. Romano said,
“We’ve heard a lot about Arsenal wanting to sign a new midfielder in the summer, and one of the latest names being linked with them is Khephren Thuram of Nice.
“My understanding is that it’s not something concrete so far, Arsenal have made no decision yet. I can still mention Martin Zubimendi and Douglas Luiz as names on their list, but we’ll have to wait and see who they decide to go for.
“There is currently no news also on Thuram as it will also depend on how much Nice will ask for him – his price tag has not been decided yet.”
Luiz’s Impressive Campaign At Villa Park
Luiz has enjoyed a solid campaign at the West Midlands club and deserves credit for performing at a high level for them in the Premier League. The 25-year-old has scored eight goals and picked up seven assists in 35 matches for Aston Villa this season across multiple competitions.
The Brazilian talent has given a good account of himself at the centre of the park based on his average of 2.0 tackles, 0.7 interceptions, 0.7 clearances, 1.8 shots, 1.6 key passes and 0.7 dribbles per game in the Premier League. He has even been accurate when distributing possession from midfield after completing 89.4% of his attempted passes in the English top flight (stats via whoscored).
Can Aston Villa Afford To Let Luiz Go In The Summer?
Luiz loves a tackle and can make some important interceptions for his team in the middle of the park. He doesn’t mind putting his foot through the ball when needed and can strike the ball with power from long range. The Brazilian sensation has got the eye to set up a few decent plays for his teammates and is a good dribbler with the ball.
At the moment, Luiz remains one of the first names in Aston Villa boss Unai Emery’s teamsheet. Thus, the Villans simply cannot afford to let him go when the transfer window commences later this year.
The West Midlands club should only consider cashing in on him if they receive an astronomical offer from a top club in the summer.
