In a recent report, Voetbal Krant mentioned that Arsenal are set to rival Chelsea for Everton midfielder Amadou Onana. It has been stated that the Gunners are not willing to pay north of £43m to secure the services of the Belgian midfield ace in the summer.
Onana’s Decent Run Of Form At Merseyside This Season
Onana has performed at a high level for the Toffees this season after he put in a run of impressive displays for them in the middle of the park. The 22-year-old has scored two goals and picked up one assist in 25 matches for the Merseyside club during this campaign on all fronts.
The Belgian talent has been a good performer at the centre of Sean Dyche’s midfield as he is averaging 2.5 tackles, 0.6 interceptions, 1.1 clearances, 1.0 shots and 0.6 key passes per 90 minutes in the Premier League. He has even been careful when distributing possession from midfield based on his pass completion rate of 84.6% in league football (stats via whoscored).
Onana’s current contract at Everton will run out in the summer of 2027 which would make it difficult for the Gunners to sign him on the cheap this summer.
Should Arsenal Head Coach Mikel Arteta Snap Onana Up?
Onana is a tough-tackling midfielder who can make some important interceptions for his team when he is playing well on the pitch. He usually clears the danger when the opposition are on the front foot and can even strike the ball with venom from long range. Standing at 1.95m, Onana can use his strong frame to win his fair share of aerial duels.
The Belgian sensation can even create the odd chance for others around him. He is primarily a defensive midfielder but can also function as a box-to-box midfielder if asked to do so by his manager.
We can expect Onana to bring more bite and steel to Arsenal‘s midfield department if Mikel Arteta can devise a way to win the race for his services. At 22, he has the potential to become a world-class player in his position someday. Hence, the Gunners would do well to snap Onana up when the transfer window reopens later this year.
