In a recent media segment on El Chiringuito, Spanish journalist Pipi Estrada stated that Arsenal are keen on recruiting Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams. It has been mentioned that the Gunners are eager to bring the Spanish wing wizard to North London in the summer.
Williams’ Impressive Numbers In Spanish Football
Williams is having an impressive campaign at the Spanish club as he has been responsible for putting in a series of decent performances for them in the final third. The Spanish talent has participated in 24 matches for Athletic Bilbao this season, scoring five times and picking up ten assists in the process across all fronts.
The 21-year-old has proven himself to be a reliable performer in the opponent’s half and deserves credit for averaging 1.9 shots, 1.8 key passes and 2.8 dribbles per 90 minutes in La Liga. He has even distributed possession in the final third based on his pass completion rate of 79.2% in the Spanish top flight (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the Spanish club will expire in the summer of 2027 which could make it tough for the Gunners to land him on the cheap at the end of this season.
What Will Williams Add To Arsenal Boss Mikel Arteta’s Team?
Williams is a good dribbler with the ball at his feet and can make a few driving runs with the ball out on the flanks. He can shoot the ball purely and with power from all ranges. Furthermore, the Spaniard can create a few decent openings for his teammates on the offensive end of the field.
Williams is primarily a left-sided wide player but can also function as a right-winger if asked to do so. We can expect him to add a lot of pace and firepower to Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta‘s frontline. He has what it takes to offer some healthy competition for Gabriel Martinelli, Bukayo Saka and Leandro Trossard for a regular starting spot at the North London club next season.
Hence, Arteta should focus on going all out to bring Williams to the Emirates Stadium when the transfer window reopens later this year.
