In a recent report, journalist Wayne Veysey revealed that West Ham United are leading the race for Leeds United winger Wilfried Gnonto. It has been stated that the Hammers are keen on getting a deal done for the Italian wide player before the end of this month.
Gnonto’s Unimpressive Season In The EFL Championship
Gnonto is having a lackluster campaign at Elland Road as he has struggled to be productive with his performances in the final third. The Italian talent has only scored once and picked up one assist in 23 matches for the Whites this season across multiple competitions.
The 20-year-old has made most of his appearances off the bench which explains why he is only averaging 0.8 shots and 0.9 dribbles per game in the EFL Championship. He has distributed the ball relatively well after completing 86.7% of his attempted passes in the English second tier (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the West Yorkshire club will run out in the summer of 2027 which would make it difficult for West Ham to sign him on the cheap this January.
What Will Gnonto Add To West Ham United Boss David Moyes’ Side?
Gnonto is a decent dribbler with the ball at his feet and can make a few dangerous runs with the ball in the final third when he is playing regularly and with confidence on the pitch. He can create the odd chance for his teammates and can shoot the ball with venom from long range. However, the Italian needs regular first-team starts if he wants to get his career back on track. Hence, West Ham could be an ideal destination for him in the short term.
We can expect Gnonto to add more firepower to West Ham head coach David Moyes’ attack. He is good enough to fight for a regular starting spot at the London Stadium. At 20, Gnonto has the potential to become a future star in English football. Thus, it makes sense for the Hammers to launch a move for him before the end of this transfer window.
Gnonto has got some experience in the Premier League before and won’t take much time to settle into life at the East London club if Moyes can recruit him this month.
