Thiago Silva was unsure about joining the Premier League before he moved to Chelsea. The Brazilian player joined Chelsea in 2020 for free after playing for Paris Saint-Germain. Even though he’s 39, he’s one of the most experienced players in the Premier League and is doing well.
Thiago Silva on joining Chelsea
In 2020, Thiago Silva joined Chelsea on a free transfer. He was known as one of the best center-backs globally after playing for AC Milan and PSG. However, not many expected him to still be playing at a high level for Chelsea after three years, especially at the age of 39. He played a key role in Chelsea’s victories in the Champions League, Club World Cup, and UEFA Super Cup. Additionally, he helped the team reach three domestic cup finals and was honored as Chelsea Player of the Year for the last season.
Silva was subbed on in the match against Crystal Palace last week, and it was his 100th time playing in the Premier League. When he thought about reaching this big accomplishment, he shared something interesting. He mentioned that he got interested in playing in England only after the Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola, had made some significant changes to the game.
“No man, no. I never imagined I would play in the Premier League one day. It was one, with all due respect, football that I didn’t like. Because I thought it was a lot of aerial balls, get up here, fight there. I never really liked it even though I’m good in the air and adapt well. I thought I wouldn’t play here,” Silva said.

“I think one of those responsible for this change, I think, is Pep Guardiola, right? He plays more. The others don’t try to copy but they look to play more. Because this is beautiful football to watch. And from that moment on I became interested. I watched more at home. Chelsea’s proposal came and I didn’t think twice,” he added.
Silva’s agreement ends in the summer, but talks are happening about extending it. This means he might keep playing for Chelsea even in his forties. Right now, he might play in the FA Cup third round against Preston on Saturday evening.
