Leonardo Bonucci, who used to play for Juventus, is really impressed with Harry Maguire, who has had a strong comeback this year. Even though Manchester United had a tough season, losing 14 games, including the recent one against Nottingham Forest in the Premier League, there are still some good things happening for the team.
Erik ten Hag is facing a lot of pressure, but there are a few small reasons to feel hopeful. One of the main reasons for optimism is the improvement of Harry Maguire. He seemed like he might leave the club in the summer, but now he’s been one of United’s top defenders this season, maybe even the best. Currently, he’s dealing with an injury.
Leonardo Bonucci really understands what it means to be a great center-back. In an interview, the Italian defender praised Harry Maguire, saying that Maguire has qualities that set him apart and make him truly excellent.
“There are moments during the game when you have to go to war and be ready to battle in the box as if a burglar was stealing in your house. For me, Harry is an example. After all the stick and attacks he’s received, he still plays at Manchester United and is a regular for England. That’s indicative of his mental strength. Maguire is a rocky and tough defender,” he said.
“His problem is that he was paid an infinite amount of money when he joined Man United. But just because of that, can’t he occasionally drop a clanger? He has shown that he’s mentally tough, has leadership skills, personality and intelligence out of the norm,” he added.
In Ten Hag’s first season as the coach, Harry Maguire didn’t play much because the team preferred Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez in defense, and they were both really good. But this season, with Martinez injured, Maguire got a chance to play and has been doing great. He scored an important goal with his head against FC Copenhagen in the Champions League, giving hope for the team. Even though Maguire is currently injured, he’ll try to become the main defender again for Manchester United when he comes back.
