In a recent report, The Daily Telegraph mentioned that Newcastle United are leading the race for Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips. It has been stated that the Magpies along with Paris Saint-Germain are in pole position to land the English midfield ace this year.
Phillips’ Lack Of Game Time At The Etihad Stadium
Phillips has struggled to secure a regular starting spot in Pep Guardiola’s first team this season as he has often found himself behind Rodri, John Stones and Mateo Kovacic in Man City’s pecking order. The former Leeds United talent has only made ten appearances for his current employers during this campaign, scoring one goal in the process across multiple competitions.
The 28-year-old has seen most of his game-time come off the bench which could be why he is only averaging 0.8 tackles, 0.5 interceptions and 0.5 clearances per 90 minutes in the Premier League. He has even been accurate when distributing possession from midfield after completing 89.7% of his attempted passes in the English first division (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the Mancunian club will run out in the summer of 2028. Hence, Newcastle will have to launch a big offer if they want to win the race to land Phillips in this January transfer period.
Should Newcastle United Boss Eddie Howe Get Phillips On Board?
Phillips is a good tackler of the ball and can time his challenges well to secure the ball back for his side inside his half. He doesn’t hesitate to put his foot through the ball when the opposition are on the front foot and is a decent passer of the ball as well.
However, the English talent has to find a way to earn more playing opportunities in the coming years if he wants to improve as a footballer. Thus, he might fancy a move to Newcastle this winter.
Phillips would add more bite and steel to Eddie Howe’s midfield department. He will also help the Magpies challenge across all fronts in the future. At 28, the English midfield ace is about to enter his prime soon. Therefore, the Tyneside club should consider getting Phillips on board before the end of this winter transfer window.
