According to a report from Liverpool Echo, it has been suggested that Liverpool are keeping a close eye on Borussia Monchengladbach’s center-back, Ko Itakura. Fabrizio Romano has stated that the Reds have been actively observing the player, with scouts having been dispatched numerous times to watch the defender. Romano also mentioned Tottenham Hotspur as another club showing interest in the 26-year-old.
Itakura’s Solid Run Of Form In Bundesliga So Far This Season
Itakura, who shares the international stage with Wataru Endo, became a part of Manchester City in 2019 but didn’t make an appearance under Pep Guardiola’s management before moving to Germany. The Japan international has produced a string of solid displays in the defensive end for his side. He has scored two goals while making seven appearances on top of showing his defensive prowess.
The Japanese defender has averaged 1.7 tackles, 1.7 interceptions and 3.0 clearances per game in the Bundesliga. He has also been excellent in playing his way out from the back after completing 88.7% of his attempted passes in the German top flight (stats via whoscored).
Should Klopp Bring Him To Liverpool?
A key aspect of Klopp’s defensive strategy involves a high line and pressing from the front. Itakura’s attributes suggest he could integrate well into this system. His versatility is an asset; capable of playing as a central defender or as a defensive midfielder, his adaptability aligns with Klopp’s preference for players comfortable in multiple positions.
Liverpool’s defensive unit often requires not only resilience but also composure on the ball to initiate attacks from the back. Itakura’s technical abilities and passing range make him an intriguing prospect. His composure in possession, ability to distribute accurately, and initiate build-up play could be an asset for Liverpool’s style, aiding in the transition from defense to attack seamlessly.
However, the adaptation to the rigors of the Premier League could be a hurdle for Itakura. While he has showcased his abilities in the Bundesliga, adjusting to the physicality and pace of English football presents a different challenge altogether.
Furthermore, competition within the Liverpool squad might also pose a consideration. The Reds already boast talented defenders, raising questions about Itakura’s immediate role and impact upon arrival. However, Klopp’s rotation policy and the need for depth in a demanding season could provide opportunities for Itakura to prove his worth.
