Since Todd Boehly took over at Chelsea last year, the club has spent more than £1 billion on player transfers and loans. They surpassed the £1 billion milestone when they bought Cole Palmer from Manchester City on the final day of the transfer window last summer. Many people have criticized their strategy of spending big on young and inexperienced players. Recently a pundit slammed Chelsea for not buying England star James Maddison.
Pundit criticizes Chelsea for not buying James Maddison
Chelsea have had a bit of a rollercoaster season. They’ve been going up and down. Although signing young talents might be good for the future, right now, things don’t seem too smart. Chelsea’s plan is to get young players, but because of that, they missed out on some really good footballers in the last year.
Chelsea didn’t choose to sign James Maddison this summer because they thought he was too old. Scott Minto, talking on the Premier League All Access Podcast, shared that he doesn’t like the fact that Chelsea didn’t go for Maddison.
“I hate the fact that Chelsea have gone under 25. If they’re over 25 they won’t touch them. They missed out on James Maddison and they’ll probably miss out on Ivan Toney, and those are two players they’re crying out for here and now,” Minto said.
Resale value and potential are important, but Maddison is a great player who could have helped Chelsea right away. Also, other than Thiago Silva, there aren’t a lot of older players on the Blues’ team. Reece James is the captain, but he’s been on the sidelines a lot because of injuries. Conor Gallagher leads the team when James and Ben Chilwell are injured. Maddison could have also been a captain for the team.
