In a recent print edition, Sport claimed that Barcelona have identified Aston Villa star Douglas Luiz as a target. It has been mentioned that the Catalan club have set their sights on signing the Brazilian midfielder this year.
Luiz’s Impressive Run Of Form In The Premier League
Luiz is having a fine campaign at Villa Park as he has been responsible for putting in a handful of influential displays at the centre of Unai Emery’s midfield. The 25-year-old has found the back of the net on seven occasions and earned five assists in 28 appearances for the Villans this season across various competitions.
The Brazilian talent has been a positive influence at both ends of the pitch and has done well to average 2.1 tackles, 0.7 interceptions, 0.6 clearances, 1.9 shots, 1.4 key passes and 0.6 dribbles per game in the Premier League. He has taken care of the ball when distributing possession from midfield after completing 88.5% of his attempted passes in the English top flight (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the West Midlands club will expire in the summer of 2026. Therefore, Barcelona would find it difficult to sign him on the cheap this January or at the end of this campaign.
What Will Luiz Add To Barcelona Boss Xavi’s Side?
Luiz is a good tackler of the ball and can make some important interceptions for his side at the centre of the park. He doesn’t hesitate to clear the danger when the opposition are on the front foot and can strike the ball purely and with power from long range.
The Brazilian midfield ace can set up some decent plays for others around him in the final third and is a decent dribbler with the ball as well. He is an accurate passer as well which makes him a great fit for Xavi’s brand of football at the Nou Camp.
Luiz would add more quality to Barcelona‘s midfield department. He would also help the Catalan club challenge for some major honours over the next few years. At 25, the best is yet to come from the Brazilian talent. However, Barca might struggle to find the funds to sign someone of Luiz’s quality and skillset this year.
