In a recent report, Fichajes claimed that Barcelona are keen on recruiting Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella at the end of this campaign. It has been stated that the Catalan club are eager to secure the services of the Spanish left-back next summer.
Cucurella’s Recent Form At Stamford Bridge
Cucurella has played a sporadic role in Mauricio Pochettino’s squad this season but has managed to put in a few solid displays for them on the defensive third of the pitch. The Spaniard has made 12 appearances for Chelsea during this campaign but has failed to find the back of the net or assist a goal for them across various competitions.
The 25-year-old has been a decent performer when defending inside his half as he is averaging 3.0 tackles, 1.3 interceptions and 1.9 clearances per game in the Premier League. He has even been careful when distributing possession from the back after making 87% of his attempted passes in the English top tier (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the West London club will expire in the summer of 2028 which could make it difficult for the Catalan club to sign him on the cheap in the summer transfer window.
What Will Cucurella Bring To Barcelona?
Cucurella is a tough-tackling full-back who can time his challenges well to secure the ball back for his side on the defensive end of the field. The Spanish defender usually puts his foot through the ball when needed and can create some inviting chances for his teammates when he is playing regularly and with confidence on the pitch.
However, Cucurella has failed to earn a regular starting spot at Stamford Bridge this season and could welcome an opportunity to seal a move to Barcelona if Xavi decide to move in for him next summer.
At 25, Cucurella is about to enter his prime which makes him a worthy target for Barca to consider at the end of this season. He would bring more bite and steel to Xavi’s defence and could help the Catalan club challenge across all fronts over the next few years.
However, as mentioned earlier, it won’t be easy for Xavi to arrange a cut-price move for Cucurella as he is still under a long-term contract at Chelsea.
