In a recent edition of The 2 Robbies, pundit Robbie Earle urged Arsenal to move in for Newcastle United forward Callum Wilson. Earle said,
“I’ll chuck a little one at you. And it probably isn’t going to happen, but what about Callum Wilson? He’s apparently available at Newcastle because of Newcastle’s financial position and whatever. There’s talk about him going on loan to Atletico Madrid. Could I loan him for six months?
“I’m just saying if Arsenal are looking around at options, could Callum Wilson be a cheeky little option?”
Wilson’s Impressive Numbers In The Premier League
Wilson has enjoyed a decent run of form at St. James’ Park during this campaign as he has managed to produce a series of fruitful displays for the Magpies in the final third. The 31-year-old has scored 16 times and earned two assists in 40 appearances for the Tyneside club this season across all competitions.
The English striker has led the line well by averaging 2.2 shots, 0.4 key passes and 0.8 dribbles per game in the Premier League. However, he lacks quality when distributing the ball in the opponent’s half based on his pass completion rate of 64.2% in league football (stats via whoscored).
Should Arsenal Boss Mikel Arteta Go For Wilson?
Wilson can engineer a yard of space for himself to get a few strikes in on-target. He is a decent dribbler with the ball at his feet and has proven himself to be a decent goal-getter in Premier League football. However, the English striker lacks quality when linking up play with others around him in the final third.
Still, there is no denying that Wilson would add a lot of goals to Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta’s attack. He has what it takes to help the Gunners sustain a title charge in England this season. He would also offer some healthy competition for Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah at the London club. Hence, Arteta should think about going for him this month but only on a short-term, loan deal.
At 31, Wilson is a player on the decline, so the North London club should only sign him if they can get him on loan before the end of this January transfer period.
