Arsenal Have Held Talks To Recruit This Everton Midfielder: Decent Fit For Mikel Arteta?

In a recent report, Belgium’s Het Nieuwsblad revealed that Arsenal have held talks to recruit Everton midfielder Amadou Onana. However, it is understood that the Gunners are unwilling to push to get a deal done for the Belgian talent this January.

Onana’s Impressive Form In English Football This Season

Onana is having a solid campaign at the Merseyside club as he has managed to put in a handful of influential performances at the centre of Sean Dyche’s midfield. The 22-year-old has registered two goals and secured one assist in 23 matches for Everton this season across all competitions.

The Belgian sensation has offered decent protection for his teammates at the back based on his average of 2.6 tackles, 0.6 interceptions, 1.1 clearances, 1.1 shots and 0.6 key passes per 90 minutes in the Premier League. He has even been accurate when distributing the ball from midfield after completing 84.2% of his attempted passes in the English top tier (stats via whoscored).

His current contract at Goodison Park will run out in the summer of 2027. Hence, it would take a big fee for the Gunners to stand a chance to acquire the services of the Belgium international this month.

Is Onana A Decent Fit For Arsenal Head Coach Mikel Arteta?

Onana is a solid tackler of the ball and can read the danger well to make a few timely interceptions for his team in the middle of the park. He doesn’t hesitate to clear the danger when required and can shoot the ball with venom from long range. The Belgian midfield ace can even engineer the odd chance for others around him in the opponent’s half. He is an accurate passer of the ball as well.

Onana would have added more bite and steel to Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta’s midfield department and might have even helped the Gunners challenge for some major trophies over the next few years.

However, the North London club could struggle to get a deal done for him financially before the end of this month. With all things considered, Onana would be a great fit for Arsenal but Arteta has no choice but to wait before he can move in for him as the Arsenal boss doesn’t have the funds to pull off such a transfer right now.
