In a recent interview with Area Napoli, journalist Rudy Galetti revealed that West Ham United are showing interest in Chelsea talent Ian Maatsen. Galetti said,
“Chelsea is working to lighten the squad in view of the January transfer window due to financial FairPlay. Among the upcoming names there is also Ian Maatsen.
“West Ham and two other English clubs are strong on the Dutch full-back. But also pay attention to Napoli who asked for information on the feasibility of the operation. The player’s price is around 15-20 million euros. At the moment there are no advanced contacts but Maatsen is also liked for his young age. A profile that the Italian scouts like.”
Maatsen’s Struggles At West London This Season
Maatsen has endured a frustrating campaign at Stamford Bridge as he has struggled to nail down a regular starting spot in Mauricio Pochettino’s first team. The Dutch wide player has only featured in 12 matches for Chelsea this season but is still waiting to score or assist a goal for them across multiple competitions.
The 21-year-old has made all of his appearances off the bench which explains why he is only averaging 0.3 tackles, 0.3 interceptions, 0.4 clearances, 0.3 shots and 0.2 key passes per game in the Premier League. He has even been a bit sloppy with his ball distribution after completing 73.2% of his attempted passes in the English top flight (stats via whoscored).
What Will Maatsen Bring To West Ham United?
Maatsen loves a tackle and can make some solid interceptions for his team when he is playing at the top of his game on the pitch. He can clear the danger when required and is a good dribbler with the ball. The Dutch talent usually generates some power with his shots from long range and can deliver some inviting crosses into the opponent’s penalty box.
However, the lack of game time has seen Maatsen’s confidence take a hit. Hence, he might welcome a move to a club like West Ham where he would be guaranteed more playing time next year.
Maatsen would bring more quality to David Moyes’ squad. He is good enough to rival Emerson Palmieri and Lucas Paqueta for a regular starting role on the left flank. Plus, the Dutch sensation could help the Hammers challenge across all fronts over the next few seasons.
Thus, Moyes should consider going all out to recruit Maatsen when the transfer window commences at the start of January.
