In a recent report, AS provided an update on Aston Villa and their pursuit of Athletic Bilbao talent Nico Williams. It has been revealed that the talented wide player has penned a new contract with the Spanish club which would make it difficult for the Villans to sign him on the cheap next year.
Williams’ Impressive Record In La Liga This Season
The 21-year-old has enjoyed a great campaign at Bilbao he has put in a run of productive displays on the left side of their frontline. Williams has found the back of the net on two occasions and earned seven assists in 12 matches for his current club this season across multiple competitions.
The talented wing wizard has been a reliable performer on the offensive end of the field based on his average of 1.7 shots, 2.1 key passes and 2.9 dribbles per 90 minutes in La Liga. He has even distributed possession relatively well after making 79.4% of his attempted passes in the Spanish first division (stats via whoscored).
His new deal at Bilbao will run out in the summer of 2027. Hence, the Villans will have to make a sizable offer if they want to recruit the Spanish speedster this winter or at the end of this season.
What Should Aston Villa Boss Unai Emery Do With Regards To Williams?
Williams is a decent dribbler with the ball at his feet and can make a few driving runs with the ball out on the flanks. He has got the vision to create some good plays for others around him and can shoot the ball with power and precision from long range.
The Spaniard is primarily a left-sided wide player but can also function as a right-winger if told to do so. He is good enough to fight for a regular starting spot in the Premier League next season.
However, Williams’ new contract extension will be a big blow for Aston Villa boss Unai Emery as he could have utilized a player of his quality at Villa Park in the coming years. At the moment, Emery has no choice but to turn his attention to some of his other transfer targets ahead of the winter transfer window.
