In a recent print edition, Gazzetta dello Sport revealed that Tottenham Hotspur are among the clubs hoping to land Manchester City ace Kalvin Phillips next year. It is believed that Spurs will face competition from two other undisclosed Premier League clubs in pursuit of the English midfielder.
Phillips’ Growing Struggles In Manchester
Phillips has struggled to secure a regular starting spot at the Etihad Stadium this season as he has often found himself behind Rodri, John Stones and Manuel Akanji in Pep Guardiola’s pecking order. The 28-year-old has made eight appearances for the Mancunian club during this campaign but has failed to score or assist a goal for them across all competitions.
The English talent has seen all of his game time come as a substitute which explains why he is averaging 0.8 tackles, 0.5 interceptions and 0.5 clearances per game in the Premier League. He has been accurate when distributing possession from midfield after completing 89.7% of his attempted passes in the top tier of English football (stats via whoscored).
Phillips is under contract at the Mancunian club until the summer of 2028. Thus, Spurs will have to make a sizable offer if they want to recruit the English midfield ace.
Should Tottenham Hotspur Boss Angelos Postecoglu Snap Phillips Up?
Phillips is a tough-tackling midfielder who can read the danger well to make a few timely interceptions for his team inside his half. He can clear the danger when needed and is a good passer of the ball as well.
However, frequent injuries have seen him fall into the fringes of Guardiola’s squad. Therefore, the player might welcome a move to a top club like Tottenham in search of more game time in the coming seasons.
Phillips would add more bite and steel to Angelos Postecoglu’s midfield department. He might even help the North London club compete across all fronts in the future. All in all, Spurs would be wise to go all out to snap Phillips up when the transfer window commences at the start of next month.
