In a recent report on Substack, journalist Simon Phillips mentioned that Real Madrid are eyeing a move for Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez. It has been stated that Los Blancos are hoping to secure the services of the Argentine talent in 2024.
Fernandez’s Difficult Season At Stamford Bridge So Far
Fernandez is having a tough campaign at the West London club as he has struggled to help the Blues become consistent in the Premier League. The Argentine midfield ace has banged in three goals and grabbed one assist in 18 matches for Chelsea this season on all fronts.
The 22-year-old has proven his worth at times in the middle of the park by averaging 1.7 tackles, 0.6 interceptions, 0.8 clearances, 2.0 shots, 0.9 key passes and 0.7 dribbles per 90 minutes in the Premier League. He has even been accurate when distributing possession from midfield after making 88.4% of his attempted passes in league football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at Stamford Bridge will run out in the summer of 2031. Hence, it would take a big fee for Real Madrid to stand a chance of recruiting the Argentine sensation next year.
Should Real Madrid Get Fernandez On Board?
Fernandez is a tough-tackling midfielder who can read the danger well to secure the ball back for his side at the centre of the park. He usually clears his lines when needed and can even shoot the ball with venom from long range. The Argentina international is a good passer of the ball as well and can make some driving runs with the ball from midfield. However, he has found it difficult to adjust to life in English football during his time at Chelsea.
We can expect Fernandez to bring more quality to Real Madrid‘s midfield department. He might even help Los Blancos challenge across all competitions in the coming seasons. Thus, it makes sense for the Madrid giants to go all out to get Fernandez on board in 2024.
At 22, Fernandez has what it takes to become a world-class player in his position someday which makes him a worthy target for Real Madrid to consider at the end of this campaign. However, only time will tell whether he can prove his worth in Spain.
