Ratcliffe coming in will make people pay attention to what happens with Erik ten Hag. The team has been uncertain, and there hasn’t been a plan to remove the manager. Ratcliffe will choose whether to continue supporting the Dutchman after a tough first half of the season. Manchester United is out of Europe and is in eighth place in the Premier League before the Boxing Day match against Aston Villa at home. They haven’t scored in their last four games.

Sir Dave Brailsford, the Ineos sports director, is getting ready to talk with important people at United and will make decisions afterward, including about Ten Hag. Brailsford will have a big role, but it’s not clear if he will take over from John Murtough as United’s football director. Murtaugh doesn’t want to leave and might take a different job if Brailsford replaces him. Ratcliffe’s main goal is to find a replacement for Richard Arnold, who left as the chief executive. Jean-Claude Blanc, the CEO of Ratcliffe’s Ineos Sport, is likely to take over from Arnold.

“As a local boy and a lifelong supporter of the club, I am very pleased that we have been able to agree a deal with the Manchester United board that delegates us management responsibility of the football operations of the club. Whilst the commercial success of the club has ensured there have always been available funds to win trophies at the highest level, this potential has not been fully unlocked in recent times,” Ratcliffe said.

“We will bring the global knowledge, expertise, and talent from the wider Ineos Sport group to help drive further improvement at the club, while also providing funds intended to enable future investment into Old Trafford. We are here for the long term and recognize that a lot of challenges and hard work lie ahead, which we will approach with rigor, professionalism, and passion. We are committed to working with everyone at the club – the board, staff, players, and fans – to help drive the club forward. Our shared ambition is clear: we all want to see Manchester United back where we belong, at the very top of English, European and world football,” he added.
