In a recent interview with BBC Radio 5 (via The Daily Mirror), Alan Shearer urged Newcastle United to move in for David de Gea who is a free agent at the moment. Shearer said,
“I would agree goalkeeper and centre forward would be the two main priorities for me. But good luck trying to find a good centre forward that you can bring in for a decent amount of money.
“Yeah, I would (sign De Gea). I think Newcastle need a goalkeeper, and De Gea is out there. I know the salary would be huge but they wouldn’t have to pay a fee for him.”
De Gea’s Recent Spell At Old Trafford
De Gea is yet to sign for a club after being released by Manchester United last summer. The Spanish keeper has already proven himself to be a reliable keeper in the Premier League during his time at Old Trafford.
The 33-year-old made a total of 545 senior appearances for the Mancunian club, shipping in 590 goals and securing 190 clean sheets in the process across multiple competitions. However, he is currently a free agent and could be a good, short-term signing for Newcastle to pursue next month.
Will De Gea Be A Decent Option For Newcastle United Boss Eddie Howe?
De Gea can be a safe pair of hands in goal when he is playing well on the pitch. He has got fast reflexes that help him pull off a few solid stops at the back. The Spanish talent is a good handler of the ball as well and is proficient at passing the ball out from inside his half.
De Gea will no doubt be an upgrade over Martin Dubravka who has failed to impress as Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe’s first-team keeper in recent weeks. Therefore, the Spaniard could prove to be a decent option for the Magpies to consider in the upcoming winter transfer window.
At 33, De Gea might still have a few couple of seasons left in him to play at a high level. Hence, it makes sense for the Tyneside club to try and acquire the services of the former Man United star when the transfer window reopens this January.
