We can confirm that Fabio Silva will be moving to Rangers on loan until the end of the season. It was reports in Portugal first that claimed that both Rangers and Celtic are interested in the player, but now a decision has been made by the forward to make the move to Glasgow Rangers.
Wolves had already agreed to the deal and the player finally made up his mind to come to Rangers earlier in the week.
Nils Koppen of Rangers was instumental in getting the deal over the line.
There is no option to by included in the agreement. The Scottish club will be paying a portion of the wages of the Portuguese player.
Fabio Silva is the record £35m signing for Wolves and he was also the youngest ever player to play for Portuguese club Porto. That’s a huge acheivement.
Unfortunately, Silva is yet to settle in the Premier League and has been loaned out to Anderlecht and PSV recently.
So the signing is a bit of a gamble for Clement’s side. For example, many expected Lawrence Shankland from Hearts to be the primary target. However, this is also a message from Rangers to Hearts that they will not be overpaying for a player who will be in the last year of his contract at the end of the season.
There is still a decent chance Rangers go for Shankland, but only for a reasonable price. And we all know in Scotland, that it’s not always the case, especially when Rangers (or Celtic) come calling.
Infact, there were also suggestions of getting Morelos back to Rangers discussed which were thankfully never taken too seriously.
Silva has not exactly been in prolific form recently, but if he fires, then there is no doubt that he will be one of the stars to watch in the second half of the campaign.
Recently star signings like Aaron Ramsey have not worked out but the potential for this move being a success is definitely good.
