In a recent report, The Sun stated that Barcelona are eyeing a move for Getafe winger Mason Greenwood who is currently playing on loan from Manchester United. It has been mentioned that the Catalan club are planning to launch a £40m move for the English talent next year.
Greenwood’s Impressive Loan Spell In La Liga
Greenwood has produced a run of impressive displays on the right side of Getafe’s attack this season. The 22-year-old has found the back of the net on five occasions and grabbed four assists in 15 matches for the Spanish outfit during this campaign across multiple competitions.
The Bradford-born wide player has been a reliable performer in the opponent’s half based on his average of 2.3 shots, 1.1 key passes and 1.2 dribbles per 90 minutes in La Liga. He has even distributed the ball relatively well from the wide areas after completing 82.8% of his attempted passes in the Spanish top tier (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at his parent club Manchester United will run out in the summer of 2025. Hence, it makes sense for the Catalan club to move in for him next summer.
What Will Greenwood Bring To Barcelona?
Greenwood has got the pace to cause a lot of problems for his marker out on the flanks. He can shoot the ball with venom and accuracy from long range and can engineer some inviting chances for his teammates in the attacking third of the pitch.
The English sensation has been a consistent performer for Getafe this season. He is primarily a right-winger but can also function as a left-sided wide player or as a centre-forward if asked to do so by his manager.
At 22, Greenwood has still got a bright future ahead of him which makes him a worthy target for Barcelona to pursue next year. He would bring some much-needed firepower to Barca boss Xavi’s frontline.
There is no doubt that Greenwood is good enough to fight for a regular starting spot at the Nou Camp in the coming seasons. Therefore, Xavi would be wise to try everything in his power to bring him on board this January or at the end of this campaign.
