In a recent edition of the Talking Transfers Podcast, journalist Graeme Bailey mentioned that Tottenham Hotspur defender Ben Davies does not have a long-term future in North London. Bailey said,
“They do want to do a few things, they wanted a centre-half anyway, going forwards, Eric Dier is available at the end of the season on a free, Ben Davies, we don’t see him having a long-term future.”
Davies’ Sporadic Role In North London This Season
Davies has made just seven appearances for Spurs this season as he has struggled to nail down a regular spot in Angelos Postecoglu’s first XI. The former Swansea City talent has often found himself behind Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero in Tottenham’s pecking order.
The 30-year-old has seen most of his game time come off the bench but deserves credit for averaging 1.2 tackles and 1.2 clearances per 90 minutes in the Premier League. He has even been careful with his ball distribution based on his pass completion rate of 93.6% in the English top tier (stats via whoscored).
Should Tottenham Hotspur Boss Angelos Postecoglu Cash In On Davies?
Davies is a good tackler of the ball and can time his challenges well to earn possession back for his side inside his half. He doesn’t mind putting his foot through the ball when the opposition are on the offensive. The Welsh talent is even proficient at playing his way out from the back.
We can expect Davies to serve as an important member of Postecoglu’s squad this season. However, his current contract at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is set to run out in the summer of 2025.
Hence, Spurs should consider cashing in on him for a cut-price fee at the end of this campaign. The North London club should use the money generated from his potential sale to sign a younger replacement next summer.
